My daughter Anna Maria Birkmaier in Venice, CA in the summer of '93.
Just months earlier we had moved from Munich, where Anna was born, to L.A. where I was working at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Within less than a year, Anna went from Italian in Bavarian lederhosen (my peeps) to California goldilocks with her hair fluttering in our '82 Sebring convertible that would take us to Death Valley for the weekend. Sometimes Anna would combine Bavarian beer culture with the subtleties of, ahem, 'American' culture seen from the viewpoint of a 5-year old German/Italian...(pic below). Anna is now crisscrossing the skies for Blu Panorama Airlines out of Rome, minus lederhosen and feathers.....
