The Hikurangi trench is very deep, and when you get on a whale watching boat in Kaikoura you can look at the radar and see ocean floor drop out 3000 feet. The Kermadec trench connects with the Hikurangi trough, and it's one of the deepest on earth at about 30,000 feet.
