Pope Benedikt today remembered Saint Maximilian Kolbe, pictured above in the church of St. Francis in Ravenna, Italy. This is significant more in a historic than religious context, given Benedikt's own life story, his German nationality, and the fact that Maximilian Kolbe died in the concentration camp Auschwitz. The story and circumstances are sad and horrific, yet ultimately uplifting, and Kolbe was canonized under John Paul II. The red and white flowers hold a particular significance which is the reason I maintained the red color in the photograph.
