Marcus Agrippa, Lucii Filius, Consul Tertium Fecit
("Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the third time, built this")
One of the most beautiful buildings in the world, the Pantheon has been standing in this spot for the past two thousand years, although its appearance changed several times. Rebuilt twice after destruction by fire (80 AD and 110 AD), it has the largest unreinforced solid concrete dome in the world. Yes, concrete is actually an ancient building material. Its exact formula and composition is still being researched today, as the 1800 year-old concrete dome is considered a nearly impossible engineering feat, in fact, modern concrete would not withstand the structural forces without steel rod reinforcement. Pliny wrote about the Pantheon, Brunelleschi's dome in Florence was inspired by the Pantheon, and Michelangelo proclaimed it of "angelic and not human design." I agree.....
