Mono Lake in California is just east of Yosemite National Park, and has been a photographer's mecca for decades. Pink Floyd's album 'Wish You Were Here' originally shipped with a postcard depicting Mono Lake, showing a man diving into the lake in front of tufa formations (small picture below).  Magical at any time of the day, they really come to life after sunset, and a boat trip on the lake provides different perspectives, or just some quiet time with a book.
