Valley Homes Giant, Pahrump, Nevada.
The giant was originally built as a 'Big Friend' for a Texaco ad campaign in the 1960s. About 300 fiberglass giant were made, with plans for an army of about 3000 to man gas stations across the country. Originally they all looked the same (the ad campaign never materialized), and several have sprung up repainted and appropriated for different uses, this one helps sell prefabs.

  1. This is great. It looks like its been messed with in photoshop to exaggerate the scale. Rather the scale has been exaggerated to attract attention to diminutive homes. A great example of American vernacular roadside advertising.

  2. I know, but the scale is exactly that. Shot as a 6x9 transparency, scanned, and turned into b/w. I had a hard time deciding whether I liked color better, as the color shot has a 50s quality, but in the end I decided to go with b/w, but it's unaltered otherwise....
